English Version Swiss Customs & VAT

At Customs

When you arrive at Customs do you wonder – how many bottles of wine may I take over the border? – This in response to the often heard question – anything to declare? What exactly do I need to declare at Customs? Well with our App Zoll&MwSt this worry should be a thing of the past.

Customs due on Tobacco, Alcohol etc.

We show you what import requirements exist for various products and product categories such as Alcohol, Tobacco and Agricultural produce etc.  Customs requirements depend more on the amount of products brought over the border and less on the value of these products. The declaration must be in litres, kilo grams or number. In a convenient format our App allows you to calculate what is needed on your declaration form to Customs. So it is easily ascertained if a purchase abroad is financially feasible or when import duty becomes exorbitantly expensive.

Number of Persons

How much you pay at the border also depends on how many people undertook the purchase abroad. Please note for groceries children are counted as full beneficiaries of the purchases abroad. With the exception of Tobacco and Alcohol of course. Our app takes this into account when calculating VAT refunds and VAT & Customs declarations.

VAT, Customs and Excise

Obviously our App calculates customs and Vat payments due on entry to Switzerland. It also

calculates VAT refunds when leaving a foreign shore. This is very useful for Swiss

people undertaking purchases abroad. For example – Germany currently has a VAT rate of 19%, in Switzerland its 8%. So what

is the threshold for declaring a purchase to Customs? Our App Zoll & MwSt assists you with this matter. How do I proceed to get my VAT refund? Again Zoll & MwSt has the answer. Simple input the amount you paid in Euro and the App will work out what the purchase has cost you in Swiss Franks.

Please refer to our section Calculations Fundamentals for the App on our website for further details.

Offline – whilst purchasing Abroad.

Whilst you visit Germany or the UK – you would like to avoid roaming data charges – yet would still need the information when undertaking your purchase. Great news – our App works offline as well – brilliant if you need a quick answer whilst in a shop trying to work out if it’s worth your while to undertake a purchase. The exchange rates (Euro, Pound sterling, US dollar etc. ) will be current at the date the app was used online. So whether you are buying from neighbouring countries (Germany Italy France Austria etc.) or off to the UK or USA, Dubai or Singapore the App has the answer to the question – how much may I bring home?

Shopping Basket Function

We are all familiar with the shopping basket function whilst shopping online. So simply input all your different purchases into the Shopping Basket and the App calculates VAT refunds, VAT payments and Customs due payments.

Real-time Calculation

All entries into the App are calculated real-time – this applies to a single product or a number of products in the shopping basket – saving you time and irritation when filling in the required amounts at the customs entry point.

Automatic Update at the Start

Every time you start the App – it automatically updates the database so the latest figures can be used for calculations. So the data is current and ready to use. This function is included free of charge when you purchase the App.

Integrated Exchange Rates Conversion Tool

The App has an integrated Exchange Rate conversion tool that uses current Exchange Rates whilst online. This tool can also be used offline using the exchange rate from the update when you were last online.  It covers the FX rates of the 39 countries and is included free in the updated App.

Updates of Exchange Rates

When the App is started – Exchange rate information is updated automatically. This is useful as VAT and Customs declarations need to be made in Swiss Franks a

nd the relevant foreign currency when you return home. Calculations are always done in Swiss Franks and the currency of the country where the purchases were made.
